A parent attempts to address the socio-cultural and historical topic of light skin versus dark skin.
This story began as an apology and a thank you to my parents who conceived me at a very young age. During reflection, I realized that I was embarrassed by and resented that. But the wisdom that my father was able to share with my son – and with me even as an adult – made me aware that lessons can come at any time and wisdom grows over time.
This story could serve as a resource to educators, students, organizations, and individuals seeking to gather cultural perspectives or start a conversation about intercultural identities and relations. This personal but relatable story would also be appropriate in courses in history, race & society, and women’s studies to name a few.
